Will Eisner illo for New York Press, 4/27/97

If it's Will Eisner Week, then it must be time for me to break out my Will Eisner illo, drawn for New York Press on April 27th, 1997, (Art direction by Michael Gentile).

Bibi Netanyahu illo for New York Press, 6/3/96

Here's an illo for the late, great Alexander Cockburn's weekly column in New York Press, dated June 3rd, 1996. Not only was this my introduction to Netanyahu, (pictured here with some kind of nasty-looking war bird) it was also my introduction to finding photo reference via the web. Upon getting this assignment, I remember scrambling around trying to find pictures of Netanyahu in various magazines. It was at this point that my wife Linda suggested I try searching for pictures on this new Internet thing. The Internet and I have enjoyed an uneasy friendship ever since.

Vladimir Putin illo for the Village Voice, November 2007

This was an illo for the Village Voice in November of 2007, (a year or so after the assassination of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya). That said, given yesterday's murder of Boris Nemtsov, this seems like an appropriate moment to dust off the nearly eight year old drawing and trot it back out, (art direction by Jesus Diaz).

FOR PROCESS JUNKIES ONLY: Rough sketch for the cover of Cinema Sewer #28.

FOR PROCESS JUNKIES ONLY: Here’s the rough sketch for the cover of Cinema Sewer #28. The cover art accompanies a feature on Johnny Costano, a largely-unsung hero of late 20th Century smut photography. Again, the steaming-hot, spanking-new issue of CINEMA SEWER is available here.

BONUS---FOR DEGENERATE, STRUNG-OUT PROCESS JUNKIES ONLY: Here's my first rough sketch for the cover of CINEMA SEWER #28, which I rejected. I think you'll agree that Sketch #2 works better.

San Francisco Bay Guardian R.I.P.

I'm deeply bummed to hear that one of our very best alt weeklies
just shut its doors. I drew dozens of illos for SF Bay Guardian over the past ten years,
including cover art for The Offies, SFBG's annual year-end review.

My thanks go out to art directors Mirissa Neff, Victor Krummenacher,
Ben Hopfer, and Brooke Robertson. It was great fun!
